Nobody had Xavier Thomas this high, and it is not close. The Giants reached 87 spots to get him at Round 6, Pick 8.
So much rides on Drake Maye that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Abrams-Draine.
That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. They went 5 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
Drake Maye at the 5th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Xavier Legette in the 37th overall pick, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A quiet steal in the Round 2 slot: Troy Fautanu for less than the market said. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board fumbled Kris Abrams-Draine all the way to pick 69, and they scooped it up. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid sticker price for Tommy Eichenberg in Round 4, Pick 5, and that is fine. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They took Sataoa Laumea at par in slot 142, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They reached into another round for Xavier Thomas, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
