There is conviction, and then there is this. The Giants took Camar Wheaton a full 180 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. Just about everything broke right, and the A follows.
Fautanu at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Trust the process, because this time the process plainly worked.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 18 they get a premier pass rusher. A real need, handled.
The board had Kamari Lassiter higher than slot 39, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A tidy little value on Devontez Walker in pick 49, a step better than break-even. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Steal is underselling it; Troy Fautanu at the 70th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Javon Bullard at pick No. 82 is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Max Melton at the Round 4 slot, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
James Williams at Round 4, Pick 17 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Javion Cohen in the 143rd overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Javon Baker at the Round 6 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Camar Wheaton at pick No. 238 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
