You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Jets did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The cost of the Green reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The Jets paired the rookies with proven help, Troy Franklin leading the way.
Hit on Arvell Reese and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 2 they get an every-down engine for the run game at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In the 16th overall pick they get the heartbeat of the defense at a price that makes it sweeter. Need was not the driver here.
They did well to land Peter Woods in pick 33, just ahead of his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Kamari Ramsey at the 103rd pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They will replay Connor Lew at the Round 4 slot for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Joe Royer is a better player than No. 140 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They jumped the gun on Taylen Green, taking him earlier than his grade liked. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Thaddeus Dixon at the 228th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jaren Kanak at slot 242 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
