Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Texans were there to profit. Sonny Styles, the No. 122 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 165th pick.
Reaching for Jackson left real value on the table behind him. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up.
They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th pick they get a wrecking ball inside, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Donovan Jackson in the Round 2 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The roster fit checks out.
Circle this one: Jalen Royals at Round 3, Pick 25 is a fall that decides a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Oronde Gadsden II at pick 126, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Somehow Sonny Styles was still sitting there in the 165th overall pick, and they pounced on premier safety value. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They paid sticker price for Shilo Sanders in No. 241, and that is fine. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
