Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Texans were there to profit. Ollie Gordon II, the No. 164 name on the board, should have been long gone before Round 7, Pick 23.
If Nwankpa pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. A whole weekend of picks and wide receiver is somehow still a want.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 19 they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher. The biggest hole, addressed.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Tyler Booker reach No. 55 and blink. They did not. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Colston Loveland at Round 3, Pick 22 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Kevin Winston Jr. at the 122nd pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Xavier Nwankpa this early at slot 164. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Steal is underselling it; Ollie Gordon II at the 239th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
