Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Texans were there to profit. Ollie Gordon II, the No. 164 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 241st overall pick. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They are betting Jackson proves the room right and everyone else wrong. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with running back chief among the fixes. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
Kenneth Grant at No. 25 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They reached into another round for Donovan Jackson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jalen Royals in pick No. 89 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A safety of that caliber at slot 126 is the definition of value, full stop. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
The board fumbled Oronde Gadsden II all the way to the Round 5 slot, and they scooped it up. A need, and now a little less of one.
Ollie Gordon II at the 241st pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
