The Texans did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Kevin Winston Jr. fell into the Round 5 slot. The board rewarded a patient, disciplined weekend with a A-.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. Running back was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Add it up and this is about as clean as a draft weekend gets.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 19th overall pick they get an every-down engine for the run game, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A tidy bit of business in No. 45, where Tyler Booker graded well above the range. The roster fit checks out.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jalon Walker in Round 2, Pick 21, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board fumbled Tyler Warren all the way to pick No. 76, and they scooped it up. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They robbed the room for Dylan Fairchild here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They took Sonny Styles at par in slot 120, which is nothing to complain about. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Kevin Winston Jr. in the Round 5 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Circle this one: Cam Skattebo at pick 235 is a fall that decides a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
