You build a draft on nights like this. Kevin Winston Jr. had no business being available in the 164th overall pick, and the Texans did the only sane thing and turned in the card. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Kandra pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with interior defensive lineman the one that mattered most.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
The board had Colston Loveland higher than the 58th overall pick, and the tight end fell to them anyway. A need, and now a little less of one.
Luke Kandra at slot 89 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Somehow Barrett Carter was still sitting there in No. 126, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. It fills a real need, too.
Kevin Winston Jr. at Round 5, Pick 27 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Taking Xavier Nwankpa in pick 241 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
