Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Texans were there to profit. Gunnar Helm, the No. 70 name on the board, should have been long gone before the Round 4 slot.
They will need Broughton to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th pick they get a true top target, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Donovan Jackson. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Vernon Broughton at pick No. 89 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A tight end of that caliber at pick 126 is the definition of value, full stop. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Sonny Styles at the Round 5 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Jaylen Reed in Round 7, Pick 25 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
