Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Texans were there to profit. Kevin Winston Jr., the No. 92 name on the board, should have been long gone before the Round 5 slot. No fireworks, but a solid B.
The Capehart pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th overall pick they get a go-to option on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Tyler Warren in the 58th pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A wild overpay on Luke Kandra in pick 89, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
DeMonte Capehart in Round 4, Pick 25 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They will replay Kevin Winston Jr. at the Round 5 slot for years; that is how good the value is. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Xavier Nwankpa at No. 241 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
