The phones were a trap the Chargers kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal.
The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Allen has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The veteran additions, Tyjae Spears chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
The McCaffrey steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, cornerback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a home-run threat at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
Chop Robinson in slot 38 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A reach for T'Vondre Sweat in the 50th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
By-the-book stuff, Edgerrin Cooper at the 54th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A minor itch, scratched.
Roman Wilson in Round 3, Pick 5 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They went early on MarShawn Lloyd in pick No. 119, and the value did not follow. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Braelon Allen. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Luke McCaffrey at No. 152 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Michael Barrett in No. 183 is fair value, right on his grade. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
