The Jaylen Wright selection is the head-turner. The Packers reached 72 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Dial. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Smith pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 25 they get a moveable chess piece at tight end at a price that makes it sweeter.
The board had cheaper options than Jackson Powers-Johnson at No. 41, and it noticed. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
No edge and no loss on Javon Bullard in the 57th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 88, where Christian Haynes graded well above the range. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A wild overpay on Jaylen Wright in Round 3, Pick 28, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose DT-EDGE. Maason Smith in slot 126 leaves edge rusher, quarterback and other spots for later.
Renardo Green at Round 5, Pick 32 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Somehow Jaylin Simpson was still sitting there in the 203rd overall pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A real head-scratcher, Darius Muasau in slot 216 is miles ahead of his ranking. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They liked Nathaniel Watson enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 243. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Steal is underselling it; Marcellas Dial at pick 251 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
