Green Bay Packers

A sensible, unshowy class lands the Packers a B-.

It is a puzzling start. The Packers had quarterback, wide receiver and other spots to solve and reached instead for Cole Bishop, a safety, at No. 135. The bottom line is a respectable B-.

If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. If Sweat pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. That Verse pick is the receipt they will wave around later.

They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.25 · Pick 25 · Jared Verse · DE-EDGE · rank 16
Value with a capital V on Jared Verse in slot 25, a genuine coup. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · T'Vondre Sweat · DL · rank 60
A swing that ignored the value entirely, T'Vondre Sweat well ahead of where he belonged. The roster fit checks out.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 59
They took Edgerrin Cooper at par in the 57th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 83
They did well to land Mike Sainristil in pick 88, just ahead of his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Jaden Hicks · S · rank 107
A reach on Jaden Hicks in slot 91; the board had better options right there. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Will Shipley · RB · rank 129
Will Shipley in the Round 4 slot is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.35 · Pick 135 · Cole Bishop · S · rank 127
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending No. 135 on Cole Bishop with quarterback, wide receiver and other spots unsolved.
R6.28 · Pick 203 · Myles Jones · CB · rank 204
Myles Jones at pick No. 203 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.42 · Pick 217 · Jase McClellan · RB · rank 209
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jase McClellan at Round 6, Pick 42. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.44 · Pick 219 · Maurice Smith · C · rank 236
A reach for Maurice Smith in slot 219; a little patience would have been rewarded. It fills a real need, too.
R7.26 · Pick 246 · Walter Rouse · OT · rank 248
A straight-up fair deal on Walter Rouse at the 246th pick, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
