Somebody in No. 181 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Chargers sat still while Jaylin Simpson, the No. 137 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. More right than wrong, and a B+ to match.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 17 they get a go-to option on the outside at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Adonai Mitchell in No. 38 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
T.J. Tampa at the 56th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Value with a capital V on Braden Fiske in slot 69, a genuine coup. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Payton Wilson in the Round 3 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A minor itch, scratched.
Dominick Puni at pick 96 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It fills a real need, too.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Braelon Allen. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Cole Bishop at the 115th pick is the proof. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Circle this one: Jalen McMillan at the 140th pick is a fall that decides a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jaylin Simpson in Round 6, Pick 6 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Joe Milton III at No. 214 is money in the bank, a quarterback taken below his worth. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Caedan Wallace is a better player than the Round 7 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Good price on Michael Barrett in pick 242, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
A tidy bit of business in the 253rd overall pick, where Josh Proctor graded well above the range. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
