Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Sam Hartman at pick No. 180 is 78 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Thomas Jr.. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 18th pick they get a difference-maker at receiver, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
Amarius Mims in No. 34 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A need, and now a little less of one.
Circle this one: Brian Thomas Jr. at slot 47 is a fall that decides a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Kamari Lassiter is a better player than the Round 2 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Patrick Paul at Round 3, Pick 4 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board had Bucky Irving higher than the 103rd overall pick, and the running back fell to them anyway. It fills a real need, too.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Joe Milton III. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Sam Hartman in slot 180 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Value with a capital V on Ty'Ron Hopper in the Round 6 slot, a genuine coup. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They let Trey Knox come to them and pounced at Round 7, Pick 11. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
