Nobody had Gerry Bohanon this high, and it is not close. The Cowboys reached 184 spots to get him at pick No. 248.
The Skattebo value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 18th pick they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher, and a steal at that.
In Round 1, Pick 20 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Taking Omarion Hampton in pick No. 44 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A slide stopped in No. 72, with TreVeyon Henderson worth more than the price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Steal is underselling it; Jihaad Campbell at the 76th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Elic Ayomanor at the Round 3 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Savion Williams at the Round 4 slot is the proof. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at pick No. 147 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Kevin Winston Jr. in the 148th pick, plain and simple. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Sonny Styles in pick 168 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Somehow Cody Simon was still sitting there in Round 5, Pick 33, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Cam Skattebo at the 173rd overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
DJ Campbell slid further than he should have, and slot 209 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Gerry Bohanon at No. 248 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
