When a board-topper like Malachi Corley slides to pick 121, you do not overthink it, and the Texans did not.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. Reaching for Hopper left real value on the table behind him.
They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Quietly one of the better values of the day, JC Latham at slot 27. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Keon Coleman in the 53rd pick, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A quiet steal in the 88th overall pick: Johnny Wilson for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Malachi Corley at pick No. 121 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
You do not let a running back like Will Shipley reach the Round 4 slot and blink. They did not. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board had cheaper options than Ty'Ron Hopper at pick 158, and it noticed. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They will replay Sheridan Jones at No. 239 for years; that is how good the value is. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Blake Watson in Round 7, Pick 22 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
