The Patriots went off the board in a big way for Stone Handy, 115 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. Just about everything broke right, and the A- follows.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Stout. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
Bottom line, with Tetairoa McMillan leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 14 they get a true top target. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Colston Loveland in pick No. 38. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They reached into another round for Ozzy Trapilo, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The roster fit checks out.
They jumped the gun on Devin Neal, taking him earlier than his grade liked. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
No edge and no loss on Denzel Burke in pick 81; it is a wash and a sensible one. A minor itch, scratched.
Good price on Jake Majors in No. 106, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Miles Frazier in the 119th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Value with a capital V on Dillon Gabriel in the 144th pick, a genuine coup. It fills a real need, too.
They will replay Upton Stout at pick No. 217 for years; that is how good the value is. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Barryn Sorrell well ahead of where he belonged. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They talked themselves into Stone Handy at slot 232, and the board did not agree. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Theo Wease Jr. at Round 7, Pick 22 is the proof. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
