New England Patriots

Best value of the weekend goes to the Patriots for Watts: C+.

When a board-topper like Xavier Watts slides to pick 83, you do not overthink it, and the Patriots did not. Call it a C+ and check back in two years.

The Mills pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.4 · Pick 4 · Kelvin Banks Jr. · OT · rank 3
A straight-up fair deal on Kelvin Banks Jr. at pick No. 4, value and slot in agreement. It fills a real need, too.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Kaleb Johnson · RB · rank 39
They took Kaleb Johnson at par in the 36th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.2 · Pick 66 · Colston Loveland · TE · rank 46
They robbed the room for Colston Loveland here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The roster fit checks out.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Jayden Higgins · WR · rank 75
A reach on Jayden Higgins in the Round 3 slot; the board had better options right there. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.19 · Pick 83 · Xavier Watts · S · rank 48
They barely believed it either: Xavier Watts still on the board at the 83rd pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.2 · Pick 103 · Rylie Mills · DL · rank 135
They reached into another round for Rylie Mills, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R4.21 · Pick 122 · Azareye'h Thomas · CB · rank 103
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Azareye'h Thomas in slot 122, plain and simple. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R5.1 · Pick 138 · Smael Mondon Jr. · LB · rank 105
Smael Mondon Jr. in pick 138 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R6.22 · Pick 197 · Seth McLaughlin · C · rank 207
They went early on Seth McLaughlin in the 197th pick, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R7.4 · Pick 220 · Jaylen Reed · S · rank 222
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jaylen Reed. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R7.22 · Pick 238 · Nick Nash · WR · rank 249
Nick Nash at pick No. 238 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
