The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Drake Maye, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
Every board in the league had Smith lower, and that gap is the story. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 3 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Brian Thomas Jr. in pick 34. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
No drama and no debate, Johnny Wilson went about where he belonged in slot 68. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Good price on Mason McCormick in pick No. 104, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A clean, defensible pick in No. 136 with a little surplus value in Cole Bishop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They took Nathan Thomas at par in the 182nd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Maurice Smith at the Round 7 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
