The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Commanders watched Omarion Hampton slide 54 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Reaching for Kennard left real value on the table behind him. The Garrett Wilson pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 29th pick they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
Tyler Warren at the 57th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Kyle Kennard at Round 2, Pick 26 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid sticker price for Alfred Collins in pick No. 59, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
You do not let a safety like Malaki Starks reach the Round 2 slot and blink. They did not. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Somehow Omarion Hampton was still sitting there in No. 73, and they pounced on premier running back value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Donovan Jackson at pick 76 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
