The Packers clearly saw something nobody else did in Jaylen Wright, taking him 23 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. The good and the questionable cancel out to a C+.
With quarterback and tight end unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Hicks at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
So much rides on Calen Bullock that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 25 they get a centerfielder for the defense, though the board says they badly overpaid.
Edgerrin Cooper in the 41st overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They read the board right and Devontez Walker was the payoff at the 57th pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Sedrick Van Pran in the Round 3 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
They let Mike Sainristil come to them and pounced at Round 3, Pick 28. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A curious use of slot 125. Quarterback and tight end needed the pick; a safety in Jaden Hicks did not.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jaylen Wright this early at No. 135. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Christian Jones at the 203rd overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. It fills a real need, too.
No drama and no debate, Gabe Hall went about where he belonged in Round 6, Pick 29. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They jumped the gun on J.J. Weaver, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
