The war room fell hard for Evan Williams, and it showed at pick No. 251: 44 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
The board had cheaper options than Jackson Powers-Johnson at slot 35, and it noticed. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A tidy little value on Kamren Kinchens in pick 41, a step better than break-even. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A wide receiver of that caliber at the Round 2 slot is the definition of value, full stop. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A slide stopped in pick No. 66, with T'Vondre Sweat worth more than the price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Nice patience on Junior Colson, who had no business lasting to the 88th pick. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Jaden Hicks adds a safety and leaves edge rusher, quarterback and other spots untouched.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending slot 92 on Cedric Gray with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
A wild overpay on Isaiah Davis in pick 168, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A straight-up fair deal on Christian Jones at the Round 6 slot, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board fumbled Marcellas Dial all the way to the 216th overall pick, and they scooped it up. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Daequan Hardy in Round 7, Pick 23 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They reached into another round for Evan Williams, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
