The Cowboys did not so much draft Caedan Wallace as overpay for him, 39 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Hampton. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
Brian Thomas Jr. at the 32nd overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Edgerrin Cooper in slot 56. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
DeWayne Carter at the Round 3 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They paid a round early for Braelon Allen in No. 95, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Caedan Wallace at the 174th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They talked themselves into Bub Means at pick No. 216, and the board did not agree. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
By-the-book stuff, Trevin Wallace at No. 233 squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Dominique Hampton slipping to Round 7, Pick 24 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
