The war room fell hard for George Gumbs Jr., and it showed at pick 127: 69 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
However the rest shakes out, Caldwell at that price is a win they earned. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.
Leaving safety unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the safety spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 26 they get a lockdown presence outside, and a steal at that. More want than need.
In Round 1, Pick 27 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They went early on Harold Perkins Jr. in slot 126, and the value did not follow. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
This one needs a full-page explanation: George Gumbs Jr. in pick No. 127, miles early. The roster fit checks out.
Kaleb Elarms-Orr in No. 133 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
DeMonte Capehart in the 138th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They talked themselves into Landon Robinson at the 165th pick, and the board did not agree. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They left a pile of value on the table to take DJ Campbell this early at the Round 5 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Fair-plus on Aamil Wagner, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They barely believed it either: Jeff Caldwell still on the board at slot 220. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
