Somebody in the Round 4 slot was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Patriots sat still while Calen Bullock, the No. 83 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. The Jadeveon Clowney deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 18 they get a long-term starter on the line. A real need, handled.
J.J. McCarthy at the 34th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the quarterback. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Fair-plus on Roman Wilson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Kingsley Suamataia at pick No. 68 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They paid sticker price for Javon Baker in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Calen Bullock at No. 103 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Ben Sinnott in slot 137 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The roster fit checks out.
Dwight McGlothern in the 180th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
No edge and no loss on M.J. Devonshire in slot 193; it is a wash and a sensible one. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Caedan Wallace in the Round 7 slot, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
