Green Bay Packers

The Packers won the night they stopped Thomas from sliding. Grade: C+.

The Packers did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Nathan Thomas fell into the 217th overall pick. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C+ in the wash.

Every board in the league had McGlothern lower, and that gap is the story. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.

Hit on Jackson Powers-Johnson and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.25 · Pick 25 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 51
In pick No. 25 they get protection for the quarterback, a steep price for the projection. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · Byron Murphy II · DL · rank 40
By-the-book stuff, Byron Murphy II at Round 2, Pick 9 squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 58
A straight-up fair deal on Edgerrin Cooper at No. 57, value and slot in agreement. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Bucky Irving · RB · rank 93
They took Bucky Irving at par in the 88th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Tykee Smith · S · rank 97
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tykee Smith. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Max Melton · CB · rank 111
A slide stopped in the Round 4 slot, with Max Melton worth more than the price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.35 · Pick 135 · Jaylen Wright · RB · rank 158
They talked themselves into Jaylen Wright at pick 135, and the board did not agree. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R6.28 · Pick 203 · Josh Proctor · S · rank 187
Josh Proctor slipping to slot 203 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
R6.42 · Pick 217 · Nathan Thomas · OT · rank 176
Nathan Thomas at Round 6, Pick 42 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R6.44 · Pick 219 · Dwight McGlothern · CB · rank 257
Dwight McGlothern at the Round 6 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.26 · Pick 246 · Eric Gentry · LB · rank 251
They paid sticker price for Eric Gentry in pick 246, and that is fine. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
