The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Drake Maye, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Smith. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 5th overall pick they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
They took Jordan Morgan at par in No. 34, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid sticker price for Xavier Legette in pick 37, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Devontez Walker in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Value with a capital V on Khyree Jackson in slot 110, a genuine coup. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Tyler Davis at Round 4, Pick 12 is a conviction pick that outran the value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They did well to land Ben Sinnott in pick No. 137, just ahead of his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Isaac Guerendo in the 148th pick, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Tykee Smith in pick No. 193 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Steal is underselling it; Nathaniel Watson at slot 231 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A quiet steal in No. 232: Jordan Magee for less than the market said. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
