After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. J.J. McCarthy is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
The cost of the McCarthy reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. The Coleman steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 8 they get a franchise quarterback, a steep price for the projection. A real need, handled.
Xavier Worthy at slot 34 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid up for Roman Wilson at pick 35 when waiting would have done the job. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board fumbled Keon Coleman all the way to Round 3, Pick 2, and they scooped it up. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A cornerback of that caliber at the 68th pick is the definition of value, full stop. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They barely believed it either: Michael Hall Jr. still on the board at No. 104. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Isaiah Adams in the 136th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The roster fit checks out.
