Start where it matters. The Commanders took Drake Maye to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
They banked enough surplus on McClellan to cover a lot of smaller sins. The wide receiver hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Reaching for Ford left real value on the table behind him.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 2 they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Troy Fautanu at the Round 2 slot is the proof. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No drama and no debate, Ennis Rakestraw Jr. went about where he belonged in slot 40. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board had Jeremiah Trotter Jr. higher than the 67th pick, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A tidy bit of business in Round 4, Pick 1, where Cade Stover graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Zak Zinter. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Justin Eboigbe at pick No. 138 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jaylan Ford in the 181st overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Jase McClellan in pick 220, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
