Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Packers were there to profit. Tyrone Tracy Jr., the No. 126 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 245th overall pick. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
Reaching for Williams left real value on the table behind him. With edge rusher, cornerback and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on linebacker is the choice that costs them. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
They trusted the board more than the depth chart.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a long-term starter on the line, though they paid up to get him. A real need, handled.
No edge and no loss on Edgerrin Cooper in pick 41; it is a wash and a sensible one. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Junior Colson while clear needs at edge rusher, cornerback and other spots sat open.
MarShawn Lloyd in the 88th pick is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
By-the-book stuff, Roger Rosengarten at the Round 3 slot squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
A reach on Kitan Oladapo in pick No. 126; the board had better options right there. A minor itch, scratched.
Circle this one: Caedan Wallace at No. 169 is a fall that decides a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Evan Williams well ahead of where he belonged. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Taking Trevor Keegan in the 219th overall pick is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Tyrone Tracy Jr. in slot 245 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Trey Taylor at the Round 7 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
