The Cowboys did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Jaylin Simpson fell into pick 216.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 27th pick they get a blindside protector. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
No edge and no loss on Zach Frazier in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A tidy bit of business in pick 87, where Trey Benson graded well above the range. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
No drama and no debate, Kris Abrams-Draine went about where he belonged in No. 90. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
James Williams in Round 5, Pick 38 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jaylin Simpson at the 216th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board fumbled Ryan Flournoy all the way to slot 233, and they scooped it up. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Steele Chambers in pick No. 244 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
