Washington Commanders

A passer of the future in Williams, and a B, for the Commanders.

Future B-

The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Commanders spent their marquee pick on Caleb Williams, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.

Hopper has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The Jackson steal is the beam this whole class leans on. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.

Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.2 · Pick 2 · Caleb Williams · QB · rank 2
In the 2nd overall pick they get a long-term answer under center. A real need, handled.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Amarius Mims · OT · rank 23
Amarius Mims slipping to the 36th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R2.21 · Pick 53 · T'Vondre Sweat · DT · rank 47
T'Vondre Sweat at pick No. 53 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Javon Bullard · S · rank 60
Good price on Javon Bullard in pick 67, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R4.1 · Pick 101 · Zak Zinter · OG · rank 102
A straight-up fair deal on Zak Zinter at No. 101, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 81
Khyree Jackson at the Round 4 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.2 · Pick 138 · Ty'Ron Hopper · LB · rank 176
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Ty'Ron Hopper well ahead of where he belonged. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R6.6 · Pick 181 · Jared Wiley · TE · rank 199
Jared Wiley at slot 181 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.14 · Pick 189 · Isaiah Williams · WR · rank 185
A clean, defensible pick in pick 189 with a little surplus value in Isaiah Williams. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R6.45 · Pick 220 · JD Bertrand · LB · rank 210
A quiet steal in the 220th overall pick: JD Bertrand for less than the market said. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
R7.23 · Pick 243 · Ethan Driskell · OT · rank 247
Ethan Driskell in pick No. 243 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
