Start where it matters. The Commanders took Drake Maye to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. That James pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The cost of the Suamataia reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 2 they get a franchise quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
Ja'Tavion Sanders at pick No. 36 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A conviction pick on Kingsley Suamataia at slot 40 that the board grades a round light. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They went early on Sedrick Van Pran in pick 67, and the value did not follow. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They liked Sataoa Laumea enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 4 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Nice patience on DJ James, who had no business lasting to the 103rd pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Tommy Eichenberg at the 138th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Jha'Quan Jackson in Round 6, Pick 6 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Good price on Josh Proctor in the Round 6 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
