The Packers clearly saw something nobody else did in Cedric Gray, taking him 40 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. The Hicks pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots.
On value alone, Pearl makes the weekend a net positive.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th overall pick they get a long-term starter on the line, though the board says they badly overpaid. A clean fit for the roster.
They let Quinyon Mitchell come to them and pounced at pick 41. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid sticker price for Javon Bullard in pick No. 64, and that is fine. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They took McKinnley Jackson at par in No. 88, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Jaden Hicks adds a safety and leaves edge rusher, quarterback and other spots untouched.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Cedric Gray well ahead of where he belonged. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Will Shipley in No. 125 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jaylen Wright in slot 135 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They will replay Julian Pearl at the 203rd overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. It fits a board better than it fits this team.
Omar Speights at pick No. 217 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
They talked themselves into Demani Richardson at Round 6, Pick 44, and the board did not agree. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
They reached into another round for Evan Williams, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
