New England Patriots

The Patriots worked the phones like thieves and earned a A-.

Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Patriots spent slot 216 on J.J. Weaver, a name most had 118 spots down the list. Little to argue with here, and the A- says so.

Getting Carter where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The phones were where this weekend was really won. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped safety, which is a strange place to end up.

Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Tetairoa McMillan and all.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.6 · Pick 6 · Tetairoa McMillan · WR · rank 5
In slot 6 they get a difference-maker at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.26 · Pick 58 · Dylan Fairchild · OG · rank 55
A reasonable price with a little left over, Dylan Fairchild in the 58th pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Jihaad Campbell · LB · rank 38
You do not let a linebacker like Jihaad Campbell reach No. 69 and blink. They did not. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Jalen Royals · WR · rank 67
They let Jalen Royals come to them and pounced at Round 3, Pick 13. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.3 · Pick 104 · Tez Johnson · WR · rank 93
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Tez Johnson at pick 104. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.6 · Pick 143 · Davin Vann · DE-EDGE · rank 231
They reached a country mile for Davin Vann at the Round 5 slot, and the board is aghast. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.28 · Pick 165 · Barrett Carter · LB · rank 81
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Barrett Carter in slot 165, plain and simple. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
R6.3 · Pick 178 · Cam Skattebo · RB · rank 110
Cam Skattebo at No. 178 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R6.41 · Pick 216 · J.J. Weaver · LB-EDGE · rank 334
A wild overpay on J.J. Weaver in pick No. 216, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.1 · Pick 217 · Clay Webb · OG · rank 213
Clay Webb in the 217th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R7.4 · Pick 220 · Jake Briningstool · TE · rank 211
Value with a capital V on Jake Briningstool in the 220th overall pick, a genuine coup. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R7.22 · Pick 238 · Marcus Dumervil · OT · rank 314
They talked themselves into Marcus Dumervil at pick 238, and the board did not agree. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R7.25 · Pick 241 · Steven Parker · DE-EDGE · rank 315
Steven Parker at the Round 7 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R7.40 · Pick 256 · Thor Griffith · DL · rank 272
Thor Griffith at Round 7, Pick 40 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
