The Packers put a flag in the ground for Xavier Thomas, 38 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit.
The Sweat pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 25 they get a potential shutdown corner. The biggest hole, addressed.
Jackson Powers-Johnson in slot 41 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Calen Bullock at the 57th overall pick. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
No drama and no debate, Edgerrin Cooper went about where he belonged in pick No. 58. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
T'Vondre Sweat at the 91st pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They reached into another round for Jaylen Wright, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Good price on Christian Jones in pick 203, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Xavier Thomas this early at No. 217. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Demani Richardson in the 219th pick, miles early. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Eric Gentry at the 246th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
