The Packers did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Braelon Allen fell into the 203rd overall pick. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
The Thomas reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a potential shutdown corner, reach and all. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Brian Thomas Jr. slid further than he should have, and pick 41 is lovely value for the wide receiver. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No edge and no loss on T'Vondre Sweat in the 57th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Junior Colson slipping to No. 88 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A slide stopped in Round 3, Pick 28, with Christian Mahogany worth more than the price. The roster fit checks out.
Value said wait; Darius Robinson in the 93rd overall pick says they were not listening. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid a round early for James Williams in slot 125, more than the board wanted. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Jaylen Wright at pick No. 135 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Braelon Allen at slot 203 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A wild overpay on Demani Richardson in No. 217, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
They talked themselves into Xavier Thomas at pick 219, and the board did not agree. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Evan Williams in pick No. 246, miles early. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
