The Packers did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Omar Speights fell into No. 243. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
They will answer for taking safety early while edge rusher, quarterback and other spots went begging. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Reaching for Hicks left real value on the table behind him.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Brian Thomas Jr. in slot 41. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They went early on T'Vondre Sweat in the 44th pick, and the value did not follow. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Javon Bullard at pick No. 57 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They took Cooper Beebe at par in the Round 3 slot, which is nothing to complain about. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending No. 88 on Jaden Hicks with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
Bucky Irving at pick 91 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Max Melton in Round 4, Pick 13 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A conviction pick on Cedric Gray at the 126th overall pick that the board grades a round light. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Isaiah Davis in pick 168 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Andru Phillips in Round 6, Pick 15 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Good price on Christian Jones in No. 203, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A reach on Jaden Crumedy in the Round 6 slot; the board had better options right there. It fits a board better than it fits this team.
Steal is underselling it; Omar Speights at pick No. 243 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Dwight McGlothern. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
