Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Packers spent Round 7, Pick 26 on John Emery Jr., a name most had 97 spots down the list. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Walker steal is the beam this whole class leans on. They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th overall pick they get an island corner. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They went early on Jackson Powers-Johnson in Round 2, Pick 9, and the value did not follow. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They let Devontez Walker come to them and pounced at slot 57. The roster fit checks out.
A slide stopped in the 88th pick, with Junior Colson worth more than the price. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They did well to land McKinnley Jackson in pick No. 91, just ahead of his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A tidy little value on Sataoa Laumea in pick 125, a step better than break-even. A need, and now a little less of one.
A real head-scratcher, Jaylen Wright in the 135th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
J.J. Weaver at slot 203 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They talked themselves into Demani Richardson at the Round 6 slot, and the board did not agree. A minor itch, scratched.
Value said wait; Evan Williams in the 219th overall pick says they were not listening. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
A big swing on John Emery Jr. at pick 246, well ahead of any board in the building. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
