The Cowboys clearly saw something nobody else did in KJ Jefferson, taking him 50 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. That is an edge rusher worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
They left with cornerback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 30 they get a bell-cow for the offense. A clean fit for the roster.
They paid up for Shilo Sanders at the Round 2 slot when waiting would have done the job. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They paid a round early for Jason Marshall Jr. in slot 94, more than the board wanted. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Tyler Baron at pick 126 is the proof. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
KJ Jefferson at Round 5, Pick 30 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Brian Ugwu at pick No. 190 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Corey Kiner at No. 222 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
