The board owed the Dolphins one, and it paid up: Cornelius Johnson, the No. 186 name on the board, sitting there at the 234th overall pick like a gift left on the doorstep.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. The Boyd reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 30 they get a ballhawk on the outside at fair value. More want than need.
They paid sticker price for Kingsley Suamataia in pick No. 55, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Patrick Paul. The roster fit checks out.
Brenden Rice at slot 120 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Khristian Boyd at the 158th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They liked Grayson Murphy enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 5 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A slide stopped in pick 184, with Cody Schrader worth more than the price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Good price on Jared Wiley in the 210th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Cornelius Johnson in the Round 7 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
