New England Patriots

Brooks should have been long gone. The Patriots pounced, and earned a B.

This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Tahj Brooks, the No. 115 name on the board, stolen at pick 220. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.

Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.1 · Pick 1 · Kelvin Banks Jr. · OT · rank 3
In Round 1, Pick 1 they get a long-term starter on the line. A real need, handled.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Emeka Egbuka · WR · rank 28
Emeka Egbuka slipping to the 36th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Tyler Warren · TE · rank 44
Tyler Warren at slot 67 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R3.37 · Pick 101 · Andrew Mukuba · S · rank 71
They will replay Andrew Mukuba at pick 101 for years; that is how good the value is. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.2 · Pick 103 · Jake Majors · C · rank 93
Jake Majors at No. 103 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R4.22 · Pick 123 · TreVeyon Henderson · RB · rank 61
Taking TreVeyon Henderson in the Round 4 slot is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It fills a real need, too.
R5.1 · Pick 138 · Barrett Carter · LB · rank 82
A linebacker of that caliber at pick No. 138 is the definition of value, full stop. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R6.20 · Pick 195 · Sonny Styles · S · rank 125
Sonny Styles in the 195th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.3 · Pick 219 · DJ Campbell · OG · rank 210
DJ Campbell slid further than he should have, and Round 7, Pick 3 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R7.4 · Pick 220 · Tahj Brooks · RB · rank 115
Tahj Brooks at slot 220 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R7.22 · Pick 238 · Upton Stout · S · rank 182
The board fumbled Upton Stout all the way to pick No. 238, and they scooped it up. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
