Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Graham Barton, the No. 25 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick 56. No fireworks, but a solid B+.
They will need Ford to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. A whole weekend of picks and cornerback is somehow still a want.
The Josh Myers pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th pick they get a building block for the line at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Taking Graham Barton in the Round 2 slot is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Trey Benson went about where he belonged in Round 3, Pick 24. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board had cheaper options than DeWayne Carter at No. 88, and it noticed. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jaylan Ford in slot 174 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They barely believed it either: Cornelius Johnson still on the board at the 216th overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Nothing to complain about; Zion Tupuola-Fetui went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Trevin Wallace. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
By-the-book stuff, Josh Proctor at slot 244 squarely in line with his ranking. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
