You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Texans did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D- is the result.
The Cowing pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The Colson reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 24 they get a double-digit-sack hope. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Rome Odunze slipping to the 25th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Patrick Paul in pick No. 41 is fair value, right on his grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
No edge and no loss on Leonard Taylor III in No. 53; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
TreVeyon Henderson at the 85th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
By-the-book stuff, Christian Haynes at pick 95 squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
The board had cheaper options than Junior Colson at pick No. 100, and it noticed. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They paid up for James Williams at Round 4, Pick 9 when waiting would have done the job. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They took Nehemiah Pritchett at par in pick 121, which is nothing to complain about. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ben Sinnott. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Circle this one: Tyler Guyton at the Round 5 slot is a fall that decides a draft. The roster fit checks out.
A wide receiver of that caliber at slot 240 is the definition of value, full stop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Taking Zy Alexander in the 242nd pick is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
