The Aaron Lewis selection is the head-turner. The Cowboys reached 48 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Williams. The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.
Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 30th pick they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Value said wait; Shemar Turner in pick 119 says they were not listening. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Nothing to complain about; Cam Hart went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
James Williams at Round 5, Pick 1 is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. A minor itch, scratched.
They took Ainias Smith at par in pick No. 157, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Darius Muasau well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A big swing on Matthew Jones at Round 6, Pick 37, well ahead of any board in the building. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid a round early for Fentrell Cypress II in slot 217, more than the board wanted. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They talked themselves into Aaron Lewis at pick 251, and the board did not agree. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
