The rest of the league had time to spare on Matthew Jones; the Cowboys did not wait, grabbing him 30 spots ahead at the 212th pick.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
They bet on numbers rather than a single high pick.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 4 they get a No. 1 receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In the 24th overall pick they get a bendy edge with upside, reach and all. Need was not the driver here.
T'Vondre Sweat in slot 56 is fair value, right on his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They took Marist Liufau at par in Round 3, Pick 24, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on MarShawn Lloyd at pick 124, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Javon Foster at No. 133 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jaylan Ford at Round 5, Pick 38 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Matthew Jones. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They went early on Dwight McGlothern in pick No. 245, and the value did not follow. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
