Boards are made to be trusted, and the Patriots shredded theirs for Ozzy Trapilo. He came off 69 spots early, and the room will hear about it. It nets out a thoroughly average C-.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. The Briningstool steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 8 they get a cornerstone up front. A clean fit for the roster.
A reach for Tyler Warren in No. 36; a little patience would have been rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
Alfred Collins at the 65th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Ozzy Trapilo at Round 3, Pick 3 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They talked themselves into Smael Mondon Jr. at the Round 3 slot, and the board did not agree. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A wild overpay on Sonny Styles in pick 103, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jake Briningstool at pick 220 is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. It fills a real need, too.
Jimmy Horn Jr. in the 238th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
