After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Commanders committed. Drake Maye is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. It washes out to a C-, no better and no worse.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They will answer for taking DT-EDGE early while interior defensive lineman went begging.
On value alone, Smith makes the weekend a net positive. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The Hopper pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 3 they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
In Round 1, Pick 32 they get a building block for the line at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
The board had cheaper options than Devontez Walker at the 36th pick, and it noticed. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Chop Robinson at No. 40 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A quiet steal in pick No. 50: Kalen King for less than the market said. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Christian Haynes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE and leaves interior defensive lineman untouched.
A clean, defensible pick in the 103rd overall pick with a little surplus value in Blake Fisher. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Tykee Smith slid further than he should have, and the Round 4 slot is lovely value for the safety. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Ty'Ron Hopper at the 134th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jaheim Bell in pick No. 141. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Isaiah Davis in Round 6, Pick 6 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Sam Hartman in No. 223 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
No edge and no loss on Dylan McMahon in pick 229; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid sticker price for Jordan Johnson in the 256th overall pick, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
