You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Chiefs did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
They will need Holker to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
So much rides on Adonai Mitchell that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 32 they get a No. 1 receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
A premium they did not need to pay, DJ James a notch or two before his time. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Dominick Puni at pick 95 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Dallin Holker well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Fair-plus on Kitan Oladapo, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
By-the-book stuff, Khristian Boyd at the 173rd pick squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
They paid sticker price for Rasheen Ali in pick No. 252, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
